Château d’Allaman, a source of inspiration across generations.
In 1530, this 11th-century fortress was burnt down by Bernese troops, despite its ditches, moast and its drawbridge.
Over time, the castle knew many different owners, whether from inheritance or auctions. Among them, in 1723, the Marquise de Langallerie, known as "the happy widow", turned it into a pleasure castle, and organised frequent and brilliant receptions to open it to the spirit of arts and culture.
The humanist, Jean-Jacques de Sellon, a militant for the abolition of the death penalty and the end of the wars, inherited the castle in 1810. It thus became the provisional headquarters of the Society of Peace, which would later become the League of Nations and finally the United Nations.
"The spirit of Geneva" is inspired by Château d’Allaman. Jean-Jacques therefore engraved this description on a column of the castle, which was recently updated by the current owner, Mr Markus Jerger. Since 1975, Château d’Allaman – the building, its annexes and its surroundings – is a listed historic monument and Swiss cultural property of national importance.
In 1959, the Earl Gérard de Loriol restored the vineyard. In 1974, Samuel Brocard took over the management of the vineyard. He retired in 2016, handing down his work to Caspar Eugster.
